Rising Childhood Obesity Rates
There is a sensitive issue at hand in America today … childhood obesity. Just go to the mall, zoo, or your local pizza joint and you will see many overweight children and teens.
Federal health officials offered their analysis in The Journal of the American Medical Association and concluded that childhood obesity hit its peak from 1999 to 2006.
The New York Times reports that “32 percent of young people aged 2 through 19 were still judged overweight or obese as measured by body mass index, with roughly half falling into each of those categories. Their excess weight increases their risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and other ailments.”
The Times suggests that people hope public health programs will come to the rescue to promote healthy diets and physical exercise education.
YOU Are An Influence and Can Help With Child Obesity
I believe it’s too late and parents can’t rely on any government program or corporation. It’s up to you! I know you care about your family, whether your own kids, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren. Start with them. It’s never too late to start teaching kids around you about healthy eating and fun kids’ exercises.
The earlier you start the better. You have the freedom to buy whatever food you want. Start by chucking processed foods from your cupboards and replacing them with fruits, vegetables, healthy protein and plenty of water.
In the meantime, how about adding some fun kids’ exercises to your routine! Start conducting fun family exercise by organizing hikes, running, or entertaining indoor games. There are tons of normal household items you can use to assist in creating fun exercises, which will get your kids’ heart rates up as well as work on coordination skills and strength.
We can’t expect the FDA or any other food industry to keep us healthy. The first step begins with us and the choices we make!
