How To Get Children To Eat Healthy

fresh fruits and vegetablesThere must be reasons why we all want to know how to get children to eat healthy. Well, there are some reasons and I know for a fact some parents really struggle with this.

Sometimes just getting kids to eat anything is a task. It doesn’t matter if they are three or 12! We work hard for our money and have this tremendous responsibility to provide food and drink for our kids and the last thing we need is for them to reject what we provide.

It can make you feel frustrated on the one hand and sad on another. We all want to see our kids nourished and healthy. These situations can make you feel a little emotional…even for fathers.

You don’t have to feel powerless right now. In my ebook, “Creating Healthy Kids,” I talk some about how parents can have much influence on what their kids eat without saying a word.

We all enjoy non-healthy foods in moderation sometimes and you don’t have to beat yourself up about that. During the holidays I think it’s okay for my kids to have a little apple pie and some other favorite family dishes.

The rest of the time you have total control as to what’s on the plate, what’s in the pantry and what’s in the fridge.

Here’s where the power of parenting comes in. You can totally stop buying chips and other non-nutritious foods at the store and replace them with healthier snacks.

You don’t have to buy frozen pizzas and frozen dinners. You can start making quick but really healthy meals.

The key is to stay consistent. Each meal time make sure you have vegetables and healthy proteins. When mom and dad eat it consistently over time, the kids will start to pick up on it.

When they see you enjoying your healthy food then they are much more likely to eat it too.

This is not an overnight process though.

How To Get Children To Eat Healthy Quickly

We all want things to happen quickly and instantly. You know the old story about the tortoise and the hair? It’s those who endure to the end who win.

As much as we don’t want to, sometimes we need to be patient.

Do your best to keep modeling healthy eating and it will pay off. You can’t sit there at the table and stress out and yell at your kids to eat those vegetables. I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work.

Sometimes you should just say nothing. Just enjoy the dinner conversation with your family and make sure both mom and dad are enjoying their food.

Sometimes when the kids don’t feel this pressure they will just eat the food.

I know this whole issue can be frustrating but just stick with it. How to get children to eat healthy starts with you and I and it’s all really about what foods we bring into the house.

Agree with what you said. It has to start in the home cupboard and fridge. When my kids were growing up, I introduced healthy eating from the time they were babies and it has continued into adulthood. I got them in the kitchen from age 3 to help make salads and so on and school lunch boxes had in some carrot sticks and bits of apples and other fruit and veg with the odd treat thrown in. They helped make salads and chopped veg so they got used to having them as a part of their diet. when that didn’t work, it was added into the meal and ‘disguised’. Good luck to today’s parents, lots more temptation.

Even if you don’t start early you can still be successful changing your family diet from unhealthy to healthy.
