Annual Kids Fitness Day Is a Great Idea!

By Kristy and Jeff Wise

It’s very important for parents to get involved in their kids’ physical well being, but schools are also starting to set higher priorities to contribute to a healthy young generation.

For example, 2008 is the third consecutive year for the Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation/Bay State Games’ statewide program, titled SBLI Kids Fitness Day, to get schools and kids involved in physical activity.

This free event is open to all elementary and middle schools in Massachusetts.

How Kids Fitness Day Works

Each school that registers must plan a physical activity involving the entire student body. The activity must run at least 30 minutes.

Past participants have organized such events as a track and field day, a neighborhood walk, and even a beach cleaning. Schools are encouraged to show children through their event that exercise can be fun.

For 2008, the program took place throughout the entire month of May, allowing schools to choose what day to hold their activity. Each year, all schools with 100% participation are put into a drawing with a chance to win a $500 grant for their physical education program. Prior to this year, 10 schools have been awarded a grant.

Since the program began in Fall 2006, more than 30,000 students have joined in the activities. This year, participating schools were also provided information on health, fitness, exercise and nutrition to give to their students.

This fitness day is a great example of people’s efforts to improve health in children. Why wait for someone else to implement a program? You can start your own program at home!

You can teach your kids the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the enjoyment of physical exercise.
